The West Cornwall Youth Trust offers financial help to Cornish charities and other organisations that provide life enhancing programmes for youngsters aged 10 to 21.
To qualify, the young people must live in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly – roughly west of an imaginary line stretching from Newquay to St Austell, including Truro. Support is only provided through organisations and applications by individuals are not considered.
The Trust is keen to support a wide range of activities designed to test, stretch and inspire young minds and bodies through projects that will teach vital life lessons and enrich their future prospects.
WCYT Trustee, Nick Fletcher, explained: “We believe that young people who take part in experiences that challenge them often come out the other side with invaluable life lessons which help as they continue on the path to adulthood.”
“We also recognise some activities are often expensive and consequently not every family can pay for the kind of activity which their children may like to take part in and that’s where the West Cornwall Youth Trust comes in.”
“The organisations to whom we give funding will meet our strict criteria in a number of ways. These include providing activities that teach teamwork, self-discipline, responsibility and leadership. Other benefits can include improved self-esteem, confidence and general social skills as well as development in physical, moral and mental abilities.”
The young people most often helped by the Trust are from deprived or disadvantaged areas, seriously financially constrained, socially disadvantaged or disabled. Other applications are also considered at the Trustees’ discretion.
Amongst the many organisations to benefit from WCYT’s latest round of grants were St Austell based mentoring charity, ReachOut, Newquay Christian Centre, Mylor Sailability, the Lelant-based South West Cornwall Riding for the Disabled Association and Mousehole’s biennial Sea Salts and Sails Festival.
